DEHRADUN (INDIA)

INTRODUCTION:

Dehradun is the capital city of Uttaranchal state and 280 km approx. from capital of India New Delhi. The city is also the head quarter of the district. It is located in Doon valley. Dehradun is surrounded by Himalaya in north Shivalik hills in south river Ganga in east and in west there is Yamuna River.

Temperature and climate of this city is pleasant an friendly. Even in summers it is not that hot. It is well established and beautiful city of India. There are lot of schools which are very famous. The forest research institute which is world famous for research are also here. In Asia this type of institute you will not find anywhere except Dehradun.

Dehradun is the perfect place to avoid the scorching heat and to relax in summers. It is tremendously growing city in recent years. Its population is approx. more than 500000. It is heaven on earth. It is also an entry point for trekking lovers and mountain hiking peoples to their journey into Garhwali Himalayas.

TAPKESHWAR TEMPLE This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is approx. 5 km from Dehradun easily accessible by road. It is called Tapkeshwar because water droplets originating from a rock fall on the Shivling placed in the temple.

It is situated on the bank of rivulet. The best time to visit this place is during March when Shivratri mela (fair) organize here. Thousands of visitors come here during this time. There are so many stairs to ascend to the temple. This is the must visit place in Dehradun.

SAHASTRA DHARA This enchanting waterfall is approx. 14 km from Dehradun. It is cold sulphur water spring. The spring is believed that after taking bath in its water all types of skin problem resolve. Sahastra dhara means thousands fold springs. It is a perfect picnic spot for friends, group or family. The Baldi River and coves give perfect combination to this [place. The springs has miraculous effects on many disease.

RAJAJI NATIONAL PARK This park is founded in 1966 a perfect place for nature lovers and wild life enthusiasts. There are so many wildlife like Tigers, Leopards, Deer, Ghorals and Elephants. There are 23 species of mammals and 315 of air fauna in this park. It is situated at the foothill of Shivalik ranges in the Himalayan foothills and represents the Shivalik eco systems. Elephants rides are also conducted here mostly in morning and in the evening. This park is spread in 820 sqmt and named after Lake Shri C. Rajagopalachari popularly known as Rajaji . Best time to visit this park is November to June. You can enjoy here the safari through the park. It will give you immense pleasure.

ASAN BARAGE AND WATER SPORT RESORT This resort came in existence in 1994 developed by GARHWAL MANDAL VIKAS NIGAM. It is popularly known as Dhalipur Lake. It is 43 km from Dehradun, Shimla highway. This resort give facilities like boating , kayaking , rowing, water skiing, canoeing etc. In winters wild life lovers can enjoy here bird watching. Dehradun is famous for water sports. In Dehradun you will never find dull moments. This city is always active.

LACCHIWALA This place is 33 km approx. from Dehradun. It is on Haridwar / Rishikesh road. This is perfect place for picnic, also gives accommodation in the surrounding of forest and greenery.

ROBBERS CAVE This is a perfect picnic spot 8 km from Dehradun. Just beyond the Anarwala village. A water stream goes here underground and reappear few meters away . This cave is all the way surrounded by hills and perfect place to whome who are searching for peace and quiet in the company of the hills. This is fabulous place for picnic and surely delight the visitors. This cave is formed by natural rift in mountain. The darkness of cave combines with the sound of fast flowing streaming give an ideal touch.

TAPOWAN IN DEHRADUN This place is in Dehradun- Rajpur road is known as place where sages of the ancient age used to do meditation. Its surroundings are very beautiful covered with greenery and mountains. It is believed that Guru Dronacharya had his school or ashram here and DIT is known as Dron doon or Dron nagar in those days. This place is 5 km from Dehradun.

THE INDIAN MILITERY ACADEMY This academy is 8 km from Dehradun and 3 km from FRI. There are more than 1200 gentlemen cadets . It is premium training center for army officers.. There are so many places for tourist to visit like library, museum, war memorial, shooting demonstration room , FRIMS golf course . One can go here for adventure sports also as river rafting, rock climbing, trekking, Para jumping and mountaineering.

HOW TO REACH:

Dehradun is very easily accessible by car, bus, train or by air from all the major cities of India. Nearest airport is Jolly Grand airport. It is 20 km from the city. Only Kingfisher and Air Deccan flies to Dehradun.

Deharadun is a major railway station and a terminus in Uttrakhand is well connected by rail to Varanasi, Allahabad, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Gorakhpur, Chennai and Ujjain.

Uttrakhand deluxe, semi deluxe buses depart every hour from ISBT, Kashmiri gate in New Delhi. There is overnight AC bus service are all provided by Uttrakhand tourism. Bus station is 5-6 km from the center in Dehradun.

By car Dehradun is 5hr journey from Delhi if you start early to avoid the traffic of Delhi.

Inside Dehradun you can roam around by walk or local buses, auto rickshaw are there too.
